The process of CNC machining plastic parts is commonly referred to as plastic molding processing. It is a broad term that encompasses a variety of methods for transforming plastic or synthetic resins into finished plastic products. Within the plastics industry, plastic processing is a major production department. This process typically includes plastic ingredient preparation, molding, machining, joining, modification, and assembly. The latter four steps generally occur after the plastic has already been shaped into either semi-finished or finished products, and are often referred to as plastic secondary processing.

 

Operation Method


There are various methods available for plastic processing, specifically for thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics. The commonly used methods for processing thermoplastics include extrusion, injection molding, calendering, blow molding, and thermoforming. On the other hand, thermosetting plastics primarily rely on molding and transfer molding techniques. These methods play a crucial role in shaping and forming plastic materials according to desired specifications.
Plastic processing in mechanical operations involves utilizing methods typically used for processing metal and wood to create plastic products with precise dimensions or in small quantities. This approach can also serve as a complementary process to molding, such as the sawing of extruded profiles. However, it is important to note that plastic has distinct properties compared to metal and wood—poor thermal conductivity, a low thermal expansion coefficient, and a different elastic modulus. These differences necessitate specific considerations during machining operations to prevent deformation caused by excessive pressure, melting during cutting due to heat, and tool adhesion. Therefore, the tools employed and cutting speeds applied must be tailored to accommodate the characteristics of plastics. Additionally, lasers can be employed to carry out operations such as cutting, perforating, and welding on plastics.
Methods for joining plastic parts in plastic processing include bonding and welding. By utilizing these techniques, plastic components can be effectively combined to create a unified structure. Welding, as a common joining method, involves melting the plastic material at the joint using heat or pressure, resulting in the fusion of the two parts. This process ensures a strong and durable bond between the plastics. On the other hand, bonding refers to the use of adhesives or bonding agents to connect the plastic parts. This method relies on the chemical interaction between the adhesive and the plastic surfaces, resulting in a secure and permanent connection. Both welding and bonding play essential roles in the assembly of various plastic products and are widely used in industries such as automotive, electronics, and manufacturing. These joining methods not only provide structural integrity but also facilitate the design and production of intricate plastic components.
Hot stamping in plastic processing involves the application of heat and pressure to transfer a layer of colored aluminum foil or patterned film onto the workpiece. This surface modification technique enhances the appearance and visual appeal of the plastic material.
